Aggregate particle shape influences the properties of both fresh and hardened concrete. Ideally, crushed aggregate particles should have a cubical shape. Subtle differences in coarse aggregate shape can cause major differences in the properties of the concrete. Operation of the crushing equipment at the aggregate source has an effect on the shape of aggregate particles. A cubical particle shape is obtained when a large part of the crushing work is accomplished by interparticle contact.
