The Heldrich, a luxury hotel in New Brunswick, N.J., was a 2007 co-winner of PCI's special Harry H. Edwards Award. High Concrete Group in Denver, Pa., was the precaster; Keating Building Corp. of Philadelphia was the general contractor.

The “who's who” of precast and prestressed concrete will gather once again for the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute's (PCI) Annual Convention/Exhibition and National Bridge Conference. The event will take place at the Phoenix Convention Center, Oct. 21–24.

This year's convention theme, The Future is Now – Ideas to Build On, is intended as, “an inspiration for the entrepreneurial spirit that will continue to make us successful in the years ahead,” says Bob Konoske, PCI chairman.

Konoske invites producers to take advantage of the informational sessions and activities at the show. Session topics will include seismic issues, industry hot topics, research and design, sustainability, marketing, architectural, operations, and productivity. Several of these sessions will offer continuing education credits.

In addition to the educational sessions, major precast industry suppliers will also display their products, materials, and services. Attendees will have the opportunity to network with them and find out about the latest innovations, applications, and techniques affecting today's industry.

The conference's keynote speaker, Edward Mazria, will provide a “green” perspective with his presentation: Precast's Role in Sustainable Design. Mazria is an internationally recognized architect with more than 30 years of experience with cutting-edge environmental design. He will discuss the precast concrete industry's contribution to energy-efficient construction.

Mazria's address will kick-off the conference during the Opening Session Breakfast from 7:30 to 10:30 am. Monday, Oct. 22. Exhibit hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Monday, and 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday.

The PCI Design Awards Banquet will be held Tuesday evening, from 6:30 to 11. The awards recognize excellence in precast concrete design. The best buildings, bridges, and custom solutions in North America will be honored.

Building bridges

The National Bridge Conference, co-sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) will be held concurrently with the PCI convention. This year's NBC spotlight state will be the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Bridge sessions will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 22, including presentations on Building Bridges Faster, Innovative Solutions, and Designing Bridges to Span Farther and Last Longer. Attendees can go to meetings of the AASHTO Technical Committee on Concrete Design and the Committee on Bridges, PCI's historic venue for discussing timely technical issues on AASHTO Design Specifications, and state-of-the-art precast/prestressed concrete design.

A Bridge Pavilion in the PCI Exhibition Hall will showcase the latest and most innovative supplies and services available to the concrete bridge community.
