Retaining Walls Key to Luxury Development

The luxury homes of the Norris Canyon Estates development in San Ramon, Calif., offer their owners spectacular mountain views. Building homes on such rugged terrain, however, required both ingenuity and an elaborate series of retaining walls. With 1:1 slope ratios and expansive clay soils, the site was a challenge to develop.

The project was further complicated by a local ordinance limiting the retaining wall height to 5 feet. The solution was to build multiple tiered walls designed to blend with the natural settings and also accommodate the wall height restriction. Some walls ended up 10 terraces deep and reached 30 feet in total height. The area of the retaining wall, supplied by ATCO Construction Products, is more than 400,000 square feet.
