    This year's Bricklayer 500 contestants will compete for a grand prize of $5000 and a Ford F-250 pick-up.

It's time to prepare for the world's only annual international event dedicated to the commercial masonry and concrete construction industries. The 36th annual World of Masonry/World of Concrete takes place Feb. 2-5 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Among the thousands of attendees will be original equipment manufacturers from around the world and exclusive U.S. distributors of equipment, tools, products, and services for the commercial construction, masonry, and concrete industries. WOM/WOC attracts about 1600 exhibitors and occupies more than 800,000 square feet of exhibit space.

MCAA Convention

The 2010 Mason Contractors Association of America Convention at World of Masonry/World of Concrete will be held Jan. 31-Feb. 5 at the Venetian hotel. MCAA's convention is the industry's premier event to get the latest news and information regarding the association and the masonry industry, gather the resources and information you need to stay competitive, increase profits, and strengthen your operation. Skills Matter! Take the Power Tool Challenge

Compete in the Bosch Power Tool Challenge, where contestants will be tested on their safety knowledge and using tools to simulate tasks performed by mason and concrete contractors.

The competition will take place in the Gold Lot in front of the North Hall during show hours. Qualifying competitions run Tuesday, Feb. 2 - Thursday, Feb. 4. One participant will win a prize each day and qualify for the championship competition on Thursday afternoon. Challenges will include:

  • Concrete drilling with the new SDS-max hammer
  • Surface grinding to remove graffiti
  • Drilling and setting anchors
  • Building a set of stairs
  • Concrete demolition
  • Register onsite to participate. The event is presented by MC and CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION.

    Bricklayer 500

    Who is the world's best bricklayer? Be sure to get a front-row seat at the SPEC MIX Bricklayer 500, the premier bricklaying competition in the world, at World of Masonry/World of Concrete. Watch as regional winners from across the nation compete for the title of “World's Best Bricklayer.” Presented by MC, the event will be held at noon, Wednesday, Feb. 3, in the Gold Lot in front of the North Hall. Twenty teams—one bricklayer and one tender—will compete to lay a double wythe, 26-foot wall in 60 minutes. Last year's winner, Tyke Mangum, from McGee Brothers Co., Monroe, N.C., broke a Bricklayer 500 record, with 890 brick laid.

    Toughest Tender Competition

    Immediately preceding the SPEC MIX Bricklayer 500, mason tenders will compete for the title of Toughest Tender. Awards will be given to the quickest Tender in a field of 20. Regional winners will race to set up their work zones starting at 11:30 am. Visit www.specmixbricklayer500.com for more details.

    Hoover Dam Bypass Tour

    Concrete is bringing the impressive Colorado River Bridge project to life. Learn the history and challenges of the Hoover Dam Bypass from the project's contractor and about the history of the original Hoover Dam project 75 years ago. A tour of the Hoover Dam Visitor's Center and a special below-the-dam tour are included. Concrete historian Luke Snell will explain how concrete made the original Hoover Dam a reality in the 1930s. Bus transportation and box lunch are provided.

    Tours are Sunday, Jan. 31, 12:30–5:30 p.m. and Friday, Feb. 5, 1–6 p.m. Buses leave from Door 9 at the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Cost is $105, including lunch.
