The I-310 extension project in Louisiana is the first time in Louisiana history that end-on construction of an interstate highway bridge over environmentally protected bayou wetlands has taken place using entirely precast and prestressed concrete components. The project is being undertaken by T. L. James Co. Inc. of Ruston, La. No access road or onsite storage is permitted to disturb the bayou, so all construction traffic must use the already assembled sections of the bridge. Pilings, caps, and deck slabs are fabricated at a precast plant created specifically for the project and then trucked four miles ot the jobsite for immediate installation by bridge-mounted cranes.
