Most small businesses begin supervisory selection with a reward mentality. The promotion is perceived as a method of giving the employee a raise. Often, little planning or thought goes into the selection, and the result is a manager lacking the skills required for effective management. Two steps can be taken to offset this. One, try to promote supervisors who possess the appropriate management traits or two, try to train supervisors who do not already possess these traits. Traits that help make successful supervisors are: a favorable attitude toward authority; a desire to compete; assertiveness; a desire to direct others; a desire to stand out; the ability to perform administrative tasks; a need for dominance and achievement; and self-confidence.
