In addition to taking second place, Byrd was also recognized for earning a 99% on the written test, which was the highest score out of all 83 competitors.
“I spent a lot of time studying,” said Byrd. “I studied the handbook provided by the NRMCA as well as course books from the NRMCA Concrete Delivery Professional Certification (CDP) courses. This really helped with the written exam.” Byrd, a veteran driver and Army veteran, was a top-five finisher in the NRMCA National Mixer Driver Championship in both 2013 and 2014. He currently drives a Terex front discharge mixer truck.
This year, 83 drivers competed in the event, which is the largest number to ever compete. The winners were selected based on a cumulative score taken from multiple competitions, including a driving challenge course, reaction-time test, visual vehicle inspection, two-hour written exam, and a delivery ticket station. The top five finishers, including Byrd, were awarded at the Wild Horse Saloon in downtown Nashville.
Five other Ozinga drivers competed in this year’s event, including John Dowell, Randy Jongsma, Mike Gorski, Ryan Johnson and Chris Fair.
