In response to legislation written to provide tax breaks for the use of cross-laminated timber (CLT), NRMCA board chairman Allen Hamblen has written an opinion essay titled Why We Fight for Concrete, offering our industry's point of view.
"Simply put, said Hamblen, just because wood is abundant does not mean its use should be incentivized for construction projects like schools and multifamily housing."
Hamblen points out that CLT is an inferior product to concrete construction in terms of safety, sustainability, and durability. He goes on to raise concerns that the bill makes it so designers, architects, and builders will instead be far too concerned with price differential than safety.
