One ready mix producer reduced dispatching time of loaded trucks by 11 percent, and now produces the same amount of concrete in 9.51 hours instead of 10.71 hours. During load out, "dead time" is the waiting time created by the cement finishing discharge before adding aggregate and tail water. The producer's solution was not to invest in new equipment, but to examine software options that could eliminate this problem. The software chosen allows dry batch plant operators to setup and start two batches at once. The dead time is eliminated since the program begins weigh-up of the second batch of cement or aggregate the instant the first batch has finished discharging. The first batch still requires the full amount of time to batch, but the second batch and each ensuing batch will overlap, saving up to 15 percent of total batch time. On drive-through plants, the batching efficiency increases to 20 percent.
