Economical and easy to install, the beam-and-block system being used by designers in the United Kingdom eliminates creaking wood floors. Beam-and-block floors are used in projects such as housing, smaller commercial buildings, motels, hostels and nursing homes and in refurbishing older structures. Regulations in the UK prohibit ground-floor slabs from being placed directly on deep fills where failures due to lack of compaction are likely to occur. Beam-and-block floors provide an economical means of avoiding such problems while also eliminating the costly backfill required prior to placing concrete ground-floor slabs. Beam-and-block flooring offers several other benefits, including use in intermediate floors, built over substantial spans for improved fire resistance and sound insulation.
