Using an incentive wage program, Carolina Precast Concrete Inc., Dunn, N.C., has found a way to increase production and decrease overtime wages in one category of its products. Company president Bob Hill started by dividing products into four categories and then assigning each catgory a dollar-per-cubic-yard value. Each worker is paid his regular hourly rate, but if his wages for the week are less than what he would net from the products he's manufactured, he receives the difference in his wages versus the value of his cubic yards poured as a bonus. If the crews' wages are in excess of the cubic yards poured they still receive their regular wages. The program has increased production and decreased overtime with no loss in quality.
