    Next to the Artistry Demonstration area, exhibitor JoeCrete Inc. sponsored Let’s Build with Concrete for Habitat. Students from Desert Rose Adult High School in North Las Vegas learned to make and finish concrete tabletops and other items. The participants were all active in the construction branch of Skills USA, an extracurricular program for vocational education students. After the show, the items were donated to Habitat for Humanity for resale at the organization’s local ReStore.

Mike Murray, Murray Decorative Concrete Supply

The demonstration project that was built by Mike Murray focused less on the level of artistry it employed and more on the urgent message it conveyed. That message is Concrete Cares and its goal is to raise awareness of breast cancer and to dramatize the need for medical research. Murray’s wife, Donna, a breast cancer survivor, was present to discuss the cause.

Carlos Andres Perez, Custom Concrete Designs Inc.

Carlos Perez built what was likely the most ambitious project, involving building out and up from the original slab. It was designed to exhibit a wide range of decorative concrete options. The central floor was made up of terrazzo sections in various colors separated by strips of bronze. Some wall and floor panels were finished with a trowel-applied, flexible thin-set material that will never crack.



Richard Winget, Authentic Environments

Richard Winget’s project represents the ruins of a Mayan-inspired portal. The structure began with a cast-in-place slab and wall with a formed doorway. He sawed and chipped away at the edges of the cast wall, and then troweled on layers of Carve-Right mortar, his own formulation.

Exhibitors Shine

Beautiful weather worked in favor of the exhibitors in the outdoor Concrete Surfaces Decorative Pavilion. Among the most popular decorative concrete exhibits was Butterfield Color Inc.’s booth, which came in first place in the Attendees’ Choice balloting and was named Best Overall by the expert judges. The judges deemed Solomon Colors Inc.’s exhibit the best for flatwork, and Smith Paints’ as tops for specialty products.

Butterfield’s booth was designed to demonstrate a full range of products, including materials, tools, and accessories. The showpiece consisted of a residential building façade and adjacent exterior elements. Solomon’s booth accommodated both displays and ongoing demonstrations, showcasing new items along with its line of products. The exhibits encompassed Solomon’s equipment for the ready-mix industry as well as its materials used by contractors. Smith Paint Products takes part in WOC to reinforce its presence among a well-established network of distributors, according to company owner Charles Bruner Sr.
