Hydraulic hoses on concrete equipment are tough and dependable, but not failure-proof. Hydraulic hose assemblies represent the "drive line" for many pieces of concrete equipment, and their unexpected failure can mean costly downtime, cleanups, and potential injury. During peak operating season, daily inspections of hydraulic hoses is advised as part of an ongoing preventive maintenance program.
A steady hydraulic leak can add up to more than 40 gallons of lost fuel per year. A buildup of dirt and fluid on hydraulic components also can impede the dissipation of heat from the system. Equipment operators should look for hose covers that are cut, torn, or worn--exposing reinforcement wire to deterioration and rust.
