The key to effective lifting of precast sandwich panels is proper lifting inserts. There are four basic types of lifting inserts: dogbone, anchor, coil, and plug. Each insert is used in conjunction with a reusable external lifting device.
Several factors must be considered when selecting lifting inserts for sandwich panels: concrete type and strength; panel type, structure, and thickness; insert capacity; and jobsite concerns. Each type of insert requires certain accessories, has specific methods of placement and engagement, and advantages and disadvantages.
