Olivenhain Dam - San Diego
North America's tallest roller-compacted concrete dam

  • Timeline: 1998 - 2003
  • Cost: $203 million
  • Size: 318 feet high, 2500 feet long
  • Concrete used: 1.4 million yards

The San Diego County Water Authority's Olivenhain Dam was the first roller-compacted concrete (RCC) dam built in California. It was completed in less than half the time needed for a concrete or earth-fill dam. Designers chose RCC to fit the fast-track construction schedule for less money, and using less water, while providing the strength of traditional concrete.

Kiewit Pacific quarried and processed aggregates and produced RCC onsite, eliminating the cost and time of hauling in materials. The concrete was produced at a rate of 1000 yards/hour, then transported with dump trucks and was spread into 1-foot horizontal layers. The dam was topped off after just seven months of construction.

CityCenter - Las Vegas
The largest privately funded construction project in the U.S.

  • Timeline: 2006 - 2009
  • Cost: $7.8 billion
  • Size: 17 buildings on 76 acres
  • Concrete used: more than 1 million yards

Cemex, which acquired Rinker Materials in 2007 (including its Las Vegas operations), is the sole ready-mixed concrete producer supplying this 17-building project, which includes six high-rise towers. To meet the demanding volume and schedule, Cemex's onsite batch plant, with a 300 yard/hour capacity, provides most of the concrete.

The producer's Quality Control department developed more than 60 mix designs for CityCenter, most including some portland cement replacement with fly ash to meet the requirements of 5000, 6000, and 7500 psi compressive strength decks, and 7000, 8000, and 10,000 psi for vertical applications. In addition to high- strength mixes, Cemex will also provide lightweight, architectural, and decorative concrete before the project is finished.
