Smith-Midland, a Virginia precast concrete company with about 100 employees, began a drug testing program in 1989. The program has eliminated illegal drug use among employees and improved productivity.
The company gives each employee a detailed booklet describing the reasons for the drug program, consequences of drug testing, and opportunities for help. The company tests employees at random, or if they suspect drug use. If an employee tests positive they are given the option to seek help or face suspension.
