Granite Rock, a Monterey Peninsula, California ready mix producer, has significantly reduced their fresh
water intake by developing a new truck washout system. In the past, the company had used up to 3,000
gallons of fresh water per day to wash out their trucks. Since installing the system they have saved more than
1.5 million gallons a year.
The system recycles water used in truck and plant washing and captures the water returned in leftover
concrete. Rainwater is also collected and added to the recycling process, instead of running down the storm
drains.
The company's voluntary reduction of water usage won it a certificate of special commendation from the
Monterey Peninsula Water Management District. According to the district, Granite Rock's water reductions are
equivalent the amount of water used by 147 Peninsula households in a year.
