Learn the history and challenges of the Hoover Dam Bypass from the project's contractor and about the history of the original Hoover Dam project 75 years ago. A tour of the Hoover Dam Visitor's Center and a special below-the-dam tour will be included. Concrete historian Luke Snell will explain how concrete brought the original Hoover Dam project to life in the 1930s. Bus transportation and box lunch provided.

Tours are Sunday, Jan. 31, 12:30–5:30 p.m. and Friday, Feb. 5, 1–6 p.m. Buses leave from Door 9 at the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Cost is $105, including lunch.

CIM Auction

The Concrete Industry Management (CIM) National Steering Committee (NSC) is again hosting an unreserved auction on Thursday, Feb. 4. Registration begins at 11 a.m. Concrete industry-related items will be auctioned, with all proceeds benefiting the CIM program. Last year's auction raised $300,000.

The CIM NSC, the CIM Patrons Groups, along with World of Concrete Show Management, Hanley Wood Publications, and Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, will sponsor the auction. For more, visit www.concretedegree.com.

World of Concrete Producer Center

Once again this year, concrete producers have an opportunity to spend some extra time with exhibitors who are especially in touch with their needs. Be sure to visit the Producer Center in the North Hall. Exhibitors include manufacturers of mixing equipment, admixtures, and technologies. Producers will want to spend some extra time in this area.

View a sample of products these exhibitors will have on display.

Women in Concrete Breakfast & Forum

At the fifth annual Women in Concrete Breakfast & Forum, 8-10 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 3, industry leaders will provide a women's perspective on “Breaking Down Barriers.” Speakers will tell how they became involved in the concrete industry, motivating moments, and how to be a leader in difficult times. Along with this informative content, the gathering provides an opportunity for professionals to network.

Presenters will be Susan Lane, Program Manager of Bridges and Transportation Structures at the Portland Cement Association; Kathy Reissig, Marketing Manager, Stone Construction Equipment, and Erin Williams Christie, Environmental Director, Ready Mix USA.

Cost is $80 before Dec. 29; $105 after Dec. 29 and onsite.

Mack Truck Safety Competition

Ready-mix truck drivers will display their driving skills at Mack's skills challenge outside the Las Vegas Convention Center. In this exciting event, drivers navigate through a course of simulated situations they would encounter on the job. Drivers will show their expertise by maneuvering through parallel parking, tight turns, and stopping as close to a line as possible. Winners each day receive great prizes. The event, presented by TCP, runs Tuesday, Feb. 2, through Thursday, Feb. 4.

Greensite Luncheon and Forum

Hosted by TCP and CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION magazines, this program allows contractors, producers, and architects to share ideas on sustainable building. With the growing demand for greener construction techniques, this luncheon connects interested contractors with experienced professionals who have surpassed these challenges. We also will recognize the 2009 Green-Site Project of the Year winners, in conjunction with the show's GreenSite exhibit.

The event takes place noon-2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 4. Cost is $80 before Dec. 29, $105 after Dec. 29 and onsite.

Topics include:

  • Trends in sustainable design focusing on carbon footprint, life cycle, and “cradle to cradle” design
  • New developments in sustainable contractor certification
  • Examples of how to market the benefits of going green
  • Contractors and architects will answer questions about the practical elements of concrete-related innovations and how they contribute to sustainable construction.
  • Speakers are Michael Lepech, assistant professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Center for Sustainable Development and Global Competitiveness, Stanford University; and Phil Williams, vice president, Technical Services and Sustainability, Webcor Builders. Panelists include Martin Bhatia, founder of OM Development; Kevin MacDonald, vice president of engineering services, Cemstone Concrete Products, and Sarah Mojzer, associate AIA and LEED AP, SM Architecture.

    John Deere Load America

Watch as pre-certified drivers demonstrate their operating and safety knowledge of front-end loaders. The competition includes a series of activities designed to test contestants' skills, including figure-8 pattern driving, accurate rear-stops, and more. Contestants will be judged on how quickly, safely, and accurately they complete the course. Presented by TCP, the event takes place Tuesday, Feb. 2, through Thursday, Feb. 4, in the Gold Lot in front of the North Hall.
