Knowing how to use and care for pneumatic equipment properly not only extends equipment life, it allows equipment to operate at peak efficiency. Here are some things to keep in mind to ensure proper use and maintenance of pneumatic equipment: Before connecting a line to a tool or device, blow it out to remove foreign materials; never run a tool at a pressure higher than it is rated for; do not allow chipping hammers to run free--this can damage the piston rings, retainer and spring. On vibrators, ensure that mounting bolts are tight, especially after installing a new one; use a channel as a stiffener to transmit vibrations evenly; if one vibrator is not sufficient, consider mounting two units 180 degrees apart; change vibrator oil at manufacturer specified intervals to ensure long life, and be sure that the correct amount and weight of oil is used; vibrator inefficiency may be caused by an obstruction in the air line, deteriorated hose, screens or filters that are not in place or working improperly, or foreign matter lodged in the nozzle. Ensure that air lines and fittings do not obstruct the proper flow of compressed air; the supply air hose should have a larger inside diameter than the inlet inside diameter of the tool or device; before dismantling pneumatic equipment that is not operating properly, check the air pressure at the inlet to be sure that the tool is getting enough air; do not modify a pneumatic tool without approval from the manufacturer; never punch a hole in a filter screen to increase air flow; do not alter the size of any ports on a piece of equipment by drilling them larger.
