Question: What are the new North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) codes for aggregates and concrete construction businesses?
Answer: The U.S. Bureau of the Census recently published a new coding system for business activity that replaces the 1987 four-digit SIC code system. (See table). Under the old system, aggregate businesses were coded with 1422. The NAICS code splits aggregate producers into two classifications: 212312 for producers of crushed and broken limestone, mining and quarrying; and 212321 for producers of sand and gravel. Highway and street construction contractors (except for elevated highways) formerly classified by the SIC code of 1611 are now classified under the NAICS code of 234111.
