The growth of synthetic-fiber-reinforced concrete (SnFRC) use over the last five years has been nothing less than phenomenal. The attention garnered by SnFRC is easily observed in the number of seminars, symposia, and technical papers encompassing a multiplicity of applications as well as actual field work. To date, more than one billion square feet of SnFRC have been successfully placed. Whitetopping and shotcrete dominate the major new field research and application attention. The SnFRC whitetopping projects to date have proven that synthetic fibers do increase the longevity of a pavement system. Synthetic fibers have been found to contribute to a number of durability properties, which translates into longer concrete life at a reasonable add-on cost vs. alternate materials. Benefits such as improved impact resistance and surface abrasion resistance, have led to the use of SnFRC in foundry floors as well as surface water diversion channels. Improved fatigue strength translates into longer pavement life, given that more repetitive axle loads can be sustained by SnFRC when compared to conventional slabs. Current dosage rates for synthetic fibers range from 0.75 pounds to more than 10 pounds per cubic yard, depending on the application. The versatility of synthetic fibers has presented engineers with a material they can specify for numerous applications.
