Few concrete pipe haulers are aware of the current federal tie-down regulations that 48 states have adopted. Vehicles must have at least one chain-type tie-down assembly for each 10 linear feet of load, or fraction over 10 feet, and then at least one chain or wire rope assembly tie-down over the length of the load. Loads should be arranged so that each pipe is contiguous for its entire length. In most cases, independent blocking and bracing must be used instead of simply bracing the load against the front of the structure. Lateral movement of concrete pipe is generally not a problem, but in instances where it is a risk, individual lateral support should also be provided. To secure trailer loads, only NACM approved welded chain should be used.
