Precast manufacturer Con-Force Structures Ltd., Winnipeg, Manitoba, met a challenge to cut costs and maintanence on parking structures when it bid on the Emily Street parking garage. Their design, using precast, addressed all the problems facing parking structures in a cold climate. Design parameters were met by several innovations in precast components, which included floors, columns, beams, and spandrels. The 482 precast, prestressed floor slabs are the widest--at 12 feet--ever used in a structure in Canada. The wider slabs reduce casting, caulking and repair costs.
