After years of hard work, the NPCA Sustainability Committee announced that three North American precast concrete Environmental Product Declaration (EPDs) are available for use by its members. This is the result of a joint effort between NPCA, PCI, and CPCI that began in 2008. The EPDs were prepared in accordance with various ISO rules and independently verified by ASTM. With the completion of the EPD effort, you now have an additional tool to offer when projects require it. And more and more projects will require it, especially when LEED v4 takes effect in October. An EPD is an independently verified and registered document that communicates transparent and comparable information about the lifecycle environmental impact of building products. The EPDs are now available for the following products:
- Architectural and Insulated Wall Panels: conventional and sandwich wall panels and architectural trim products.
- Structural Precast Concrete Products: bridge products; building products such as columns, beams and slabs; retaining walls and sound walls.
- Underground Precast Concrete Products: pipe and culvert products; manholes; wastewater and stormwater tanks; chambers; and related items such as electrical utility products.
