A coordinated research program has been undertaken to study precast seismic structural systems (PRESSS). The program is a joint effort of the United States and Japan to test for seismic response of buildings, including analytical and experimental research to study the response of precast buildings. Researchers involved with PRESSS are optimistic the 7-year research program will provide design guidelines that will be available for incorporation into the model building codes. The PRESSS objectives are to develop comprehensive and rational design recommendations based on basic research data that emphasize precast concrete construction's viability in seismic zones and to develop new materials, concepts, and technologies for precast concrete construction in seismic zones.
