The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) invites producers to “Shape Your Future” at its 57th annual Convention and National Bridge Conference in Salt Lake City. The event takes place at the Salt Palace Convention Center, Oct. 22-26.
PCI President James Toscas encourages industry professionals to invest in this valuable educational and networking opportunity. “Expand your knowledge, learn about new products and technologies, and develop vital relationships,” he says.
A Welcome Reception kicks off the event on Saturday, Oct. 22, with a preview of exhibits and PCI Foundation silent auction. The 11,000-square-foot exhibit hall will be open for four hours each day, Sunday through Tuesday.
The event promises extensive educational opportunities. Attendees can earn continuing education credits in multiple tracks, including productivity, research and development, and transportation. A technical program includes more than 120 peer-reviewed papers.
Special sessions will focus on the Strand Bond Quality Assurance Test (Peterman Test), Innovative use of FRP (fiber reinforced polymer) for the Precast Industry, and the new Third Edition of the Bridge Design Manual. A team of PCI experts will also share their observations of various precast structural systems in New Zealand from their trip following a 6.3 magnitude earthquake that hit the country earlier this year.
At the National Bridge Conference Plenary on Sunday, Oct. 23, Myint Lwin, director of the Federal Highway Administration Office of Bridge Technology, will present an overview of the Highway Bridge Program, the current state of the authorization of the Highway Bridge Programs, and a detailed review of concrete-related legislation. Utah Department of Transportation representatives will also explain their innovative approach to asset management.
Local precast producers Hanson Structural Precast and Owell Precast will open their doors for plant tours on Wednesday, Oct. 26.

With the use of photocatalytic cement, TX Active destroys atmospheric compounds that discolor concrete surfaces over time. It also reduces primary pollutants deemed harmful to health and the environment. The technology was developed to combat air pollution in urban areas and to keep structures more aesthetically pleasing with less exterior maintenance. Adjustable, grout-filled coupler
The Lenton Interlok rebar splicing system uses cementitious grout with its taper threaded system. The Lenton Interlok STHD grout-filled coupler can be adjusted to precise lengths, allowing the assembly to fit perfectly between two form walls. Used in conjunction with the standard Lenton Interlok coupler, the new system adds a parallel threaded insert, designed to telescope out to meet the forms. Rubber-tired gantry crane
The SL 75II mobile gantry crane can move anywhere in the yard or plant, and is easily adjustable for different applications. Operators can use a wireless remote to control the crane from any position, and steer each wheel independently with all-wheel electronic steering. It designed without a traversing hook to add stability to its narrow frame. Shuttlelift. 920-743-8650. www.shuttlelift.comBooth #210
Insulated wall panels
The THiN-Wall insulated wall panel system eliminates many thermal shorts associated with penetrations through the extruded polystyrene insulation. Composite action between the interior and exterior concrete wythes results in thinner, stronger walls that use less concrete to achieve the same structural strength. Precast producers also benefit from efficiency gains at the casting bed, which reduce the cost of producing precast insulated wall panels. Hughes Brothers. 800-869-0359. www.thin-wall.com
Moisture monitor for concrete mixers
The Hydro-Mix VII flush-mounted microwave moisture sensor is designed for concrete mixers and features a choice of measurement modes for improved sensitivity and accuracy, and two analogue outputs. New electronics provide advanced Digital Signal Processing filters for improved mix times. Hydronix Limited. 888-887-4884. www.hydronix.comBooth #607
Precision performance power unit
The 3500 Power Unit is designed for high-volume, high-speed,, prestress operations. The unit features intuitive controls and is easy to calibrate. Field testing has verified that after initial loading, final load is typically reached on the first pull, with no additional correction required. Its energy-saving variable displacement pump reduces heat build-up in the hydraulic fluid. Hamilton Form. 817-590-2111. www.hamiltonform.comBooth #324
Heat water and aggregates
Produce concrete year-round, with the Turbomatic thermal energy heating system. The unit heats aggregates and water with TURBOgas/steam. It melts frozen aggregates in seconds, heats aggregates in minutes, and produces hot water needed for mixing, plant and utility heating, curing, mixer washout, and other uses.
