More than 100 million tons of byproduct fines (minus-200 material) from construction aggregate production are currently being wasted. The Aggregates Foundation for Technology, Research and Education (AFTRE) has approved a research project that will provide additional guidelines for using fines in portland cement concrete. The organization plans to create a fines classification system that will take into account surface area, particle texture and shape, and clay content. The study will also develop guidelines for optimizing the use of fines in concrete mix proportioning.
