About the Awards

Sustainable building practices are gaining acceptance in the competitive world of concrete construction. The editors of Concrete Construction and The Concrete Producer have created a new award program to recognize the concrete community's innovative contributions to green building. We will honor the country's best projects in ten different categories, and award one project as the overall GreenSite Project of the Year.

We are now accepting entries for the 2010 contest.

New this year - GreenSite Award participants will receive a 20% discount to the World of Concrete bookstore www.wocbookstore.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Eligibility

Any project participant (architects, designers, contractors, materials suppliers) may submit projects. Hanley Wood employees, their relatives, and regular contributors to the magazine are not eligible.

Does my project have to contain concrete?
Yes. Projects must use a significant amount of concrete or concrete products. (Including any product specified as CSI Div. 2, Div.3, Div. 042200 or 047200)

Does the sustainable aspect of my project have to relate to concrete or concrete products?
No. Concrete or concrete products must be a significant part of the project, but the sustainable element is not limited to the materials involved. It may include energy-saving initiatives such as re-using materials for forms; fuel efficient materials delivery, etc.

Do I have to provide documentation of the project's sustainability?
Yes. Each entry will require documentation that an independent rating system has provided a sustainable certification or verification, documenting its status as a green project. If the project's owner elected not to apply for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, tell us what environmental products or practices make it an exceptional example of sustainable building.

Can I enter a project that has won other awards or been previously published?
Yes, but not one that has been entered for a GreenSite Award.

Do you accept entries from outside the United States?
Yes. Entries from outside the U.S. are welcomed.

Entry Requirements

What should I do if I'm not sure which category best fits my entry?
Enter your project in the category you feel most appropriate. If the judges feel it belongs in another category, they will switch it to that category during judging. Your entry will not be penalized.

Can the project description exceed 500 words?
Descriptions longer than 500 words will not be penalized but entrants are encouraged to keep statements as brief as possible and focus on the sustainable highlights of the entry.

What should I do if my photographer will not sign the release form?
Photographers are welcome to clarify the language or provide their own release. Images of winning projects will only used in conjunction with the design awards, and will be published in Concrete Construction and The Concrete Producer magazines, and posted on our Web sites. They will not be used outside of the awards without the photographer's express permission.

Can I submit my project without the photo release form?
Project entries should include all completed forms as required. If there is a delay with the photo release form, you may submit your project and then fax, mail, or e-mail that form separately, when completed. Your entry will not be penalized if the photo release form arrives after the project deadline date.

When is the deadline for submitting projects?

September 17, 2010

Photo requirements

How many photos should I include with my entry?
Submit between five and ten digital photos of the project. Photos must show at least one overall view of the project, one shot taken during construction (if available), and one of the completed project. Copies or printouts of the photos should be in clear presentation sleeves.

Can I send digital photos instead of prints?
Digital photos must be high resolution (300 dpi). They can be sent on CD, e-mailed, or posted to Hanley Wood's FTP site. For FTP information, contact Colette Palait at 773-824-2506 or cpalait@hanleywood.com.

Can I submit color copies instead of prints?
We prefer digital photos. However, if you are sending prints, remember these photographs are the jury's means for evaluating each entry, so color copies must be clear images that accurately convey a project's important architectural features.

Can I use photographs I took myself?
Yes, if they are professional-quality photographs that can be reproduced for publication.

Should I send drawings, floor plans or renderings?
Drawings are optional. You can include up to four drawings (maximum size 8.5; x 14 inches) showing interesting design details. These must also included with the other entry materials.

Selection of winners

Our panel of judges, including industry experts in sustainability, will select one winner in each category and one overall GreenSite Project of the Year.

Winning projects will be featured in Concrete Construction and The Concrete Producer.

How will the winners be announced?
In addition to being published in the magazines, winning projects will also be featured on the Concrete Construction and The Concrete Producer Web sites. GreenSite winners will also receive special recognition at the GREENSITE exhibit at World of Concrete.
