OSHA established the nationwide system for recording and reporting occupational injuries and illnesses. With assistance from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS), OSHA collects and processes information. Employers must keep accurate records of occupational injuries and illnesses in accordance with OSHA and BLS standards, or face heavy penalties.
Employers must post the OSHA Log and Summary of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (OSHA 200) every year from February to March. The summary must be kept on file for five years. Employees have the right to see these records.
