The straddle crane is one of the most versatile pieces of equipment used in the precast yard. In order to utilize a straddle crane to its fullest potential and eliminate accidents, a strict safety and maintenance program must be followed.
Due to the limited visibility offered by most saddle cranes, operators should work in tandem with a groundman. Audible signals and flashing lights should also be used to alert other workers to the crane's movements. Gentle handling of products, especially when not yet fully cured, is an essential part of straddle crane operation. A daily walk-around inspection should be performed to ensure the proper functionality of all components.
