Blackstone, Ill.'s Prestressed Engineering Corp. (PEC) received a plaque for no lost-time accidents in 1991. In the last three years, PEC's safety record has dramatically improved, from 20 accidents in 1989 and about 10 in 1990. The turnaround is the result of a substantial safety program implemented in 1989. The company hired a risk manager and implemented a flexible safety policy that is updated whenever changes are needed. The staff is constantly kept up to date regarding changes. Some of the reasons the safety program has worked include the top management's commitment to the program, the feedback from employees, the safety day seminar, safety incentives offered to employees, and the positive attitudes of the workers regarding the program.
