Starting a workplace program to reduce substance-abuse problems improves employee morale. Firing a worker with a substance abuse problem is not usually the best option. You'll get better results by emphasizing therapeutic goals. Controlling substance abuse in the workplace requires a mix of strategies, such as supervisor awareness and training, written policies, assistance programs, preemployment assessment and prevention/education campaigns, and testing. Supervisors should use constructive confrontation with a worker whose job performance is substandard. Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) can be used by any employer as part of its efforts to reduce substance-abuse problems. They can identify whether or not a person is using drugs and give workers a place to go for professional assistance.
