Traditionally, steel would be the material of choice for a 300-foot bridge in upstate New York, but, for a bridge over the Grasse River in Canton, NY, the specified material was prestressed concrete. Prestressed concrete was chosen over steel for its aesthetic qualities, lower cost and low maintenance requirements. Sear-Brown Group, Rochester, NY, the designer for the project teamed up with precaster Schuylkill Products Inc., Cresona, PA, in early in the design process.
