Starting off with only one plant and two small mixers in 1958, family-owned and -operated Wells Group has grown to more than 19 ready-mix plants and a fleet of more than 100 ready-mix trucks.
Although almost all of the business is focused on ready-mixed concrete, the Wells Group has a small precast operation and manages to sell some insulating concrete forms (ICFs). When tornadoes devastated the surrounding areas in March 2012, many people decided to use ICF construction to rebuild their homes and businesses.
Brian Wells, treasurer of Wells Group, realizes that being equipped with the most up-to-date technology is the best way to keep up with the competition. “We have purchased new computer batching systems over the past few years to create uniformity in our plants,” says Wells.
The producer has a comprehensive quality assurance and quality control program which include the daily testing of aggregates and fresh concrete, regular strength testing of hardened concrete, and periodic quality assurance reports from suppliers.
Wells is optimistic about what the future has in store.
“We were able to move into the Ohio and West Virginia markets and pick up some nice projects along the way,” he says. “I’m looking forward to updating our fleet and for continued growth of the company.”
The ability to overcome the Great Recession and a slew of tornadoes that devastated areas near its headquarters is a true testament to the strength of the producer. A commitment to excellence and quality service makes the Wells Group a trusted producer throughout the region.
“We are a quality company and fortunate to have wonderful people working with us and for us,” says Wells.
