Despite unusual travel restrictions that canceled thousands of flights throughout Europe, bauma 2010 organizers pronounced the event a success.

"bauma 2010 has marked a turnaround in the international construction machinery industry, us hering in the hoped-for change in sentiment," said Ralf Wezel, secretary-general of CECE, the Committee for European Construction Equipment. "The mood in the industry shows that in Europe the bottom of the cycle is now behind us. Confidence has returned."

The erupting volcano in Iceland caused havoc for travelers throughout Europe and for many in other parts of the world who were trying to fly to the continent. Bauma 2010, held in Munich, Germany, April 19-25, was especiallyimpacted early in the week. Those who planned to attend from the U.S., Asia, and India had a diffi cult time getting to the event.

More than 415,000 people from more than 200 countries attended, 17% fewer than bauma 2007. Organizers said 35% of attendees were from outside Germany.

A total of 3150 exhibitors from 53 countries attended; only 50 exhibitors who planned to attend did not. Sixty percent of exhibiting companies were from outside of Germany; 5.9 million square feet of exhibit space was booked.

Already by the midway point of the event, a number of exhibitors were reporting more sales than they had expected. "The good old times are coming back. The figures for sales taken at the fair far exceed our expectations. We reckon we will be able to match the volume we took at the record bauma in 2007. This is a clear signal that at Zeppelin-Cat, too, business is moving forward again after a difficult 2009," said Michael Heidemann, managing director of Zeppelin and CEO of Zeppelin Baumaschinen GmbH, Germany.

"We had a lot of new business opportunities, some of which already resulted in unexpected sales," added Michikazu Okada, vice president of Hitachi Sumitomo Heavy Industries Construction Crane Co. of Japan.

A survey taken during the event showed almost half the exhibitors are expecting the economy to improve. "Because of the turnaround which bauma 2010 has ushered in for the sector worldwide, we are looking forward optimistically to the already fully booked bauma China 2010 in Shanghai. Interest in the new event bC India 2011 in Mumbai also has led to a considerable expansion in the space originally earmarked for the event," said Klaus Dittrich, chairman and CEO of event organizer Messe München GmbH. bauma China will be Nov. 23-26; bC India, Feb. 8-11, 2011. The 30th bauma will take place in April 2013 in Munich. Visit

Following are products from manufacturers that exhibited at the show this year:

Easily tranport mobile plant
The Mobilmix 0.5 super-mobile mixing plant's output rate is 40 cu. yds. per hour. Comprised of two completely preassembled and prewired 20-ft. containers, the plant is erected and ready for operation in just hours. It requires no crane for unloading and erecting, a decisive practical advantage in many markets. Dismantling is also easy, as the plant can be transported to the next building site. Liebherr Concrete Technology Co.866-879-6312.

Analyze and support data
COMMANDqc uses real-time data to optimize mix materials. The product quickly compares groups of plants, products, or labs, and identifi es differences or ineffi ciencies. With the click of a button, data gathered through analysis can be exported to tools like Excel for further analysis or reporting. Monitor cement usage to prevent overuse and ensure proper batching, and review aggregate gradings through customized reports and graphs. Command Alkon. 800-624-1872.

100% mixing agitation
Separation of material transport from the mixing function is a major advantage of themanufacturer's mixers. Because of this, the mixing process can be tailored to the product. The combination of a dedicated drive for the mixing pan, independent rotor, and a stationary combination tool acting as a flow detector ensures 100% material agitation on each revolution of the mixing pan. Eirich Machines USA. 877-336-2444.

Sun-powered pigment
The photo-catalytic properties of Solarox colored pigment enables surfaces to self-clean, reduce air pollutants, and inhibit microbial growth. It is available in the complete range of yellow, red, and black iron oxide colors that can be blended to create a spectrum of brown, gold, tan, and buff color combinations. The pigment complies with existing industry standards for iron oxides. Rockwood Pigments. 800-638-4444.

Tough filters for tough environments
A600, A1000, and A2000 air cleaners endure tough environments and are mobile. All models include individuallytested and certifi ed HEPA fi lters. To fi lter gases and odors, there is an optional carbon filter that fits directly to the machine. Two warning lights indicate 80% fi lter clogging and breakage or leakage. Pullman-Holt Corp. 800-237-7582.

Strong mix action
With its strongshell, rugged reliability, and "piggyback" feed hoppers and scales, the RG twinshaft mixer has strong mixing action and saves on cement. Its belt reducer and two-stage planetary gearbox does not require a separate oil cooler. Sizes range from 2 to 10.5 cu. yds., giving from 80 to 427 cu. yd. of compacted concrete per hour. Ocmer, available from Scale-Tron. 800-632-7083.
