Researchers at Southern Illinois University used ASTM C 672, Standard Test Method for Scaling Resistance of Concrete Surfaces Exposed to Deicing Chemicals, which involves soaking specimens in tap water for 48 hours before a 4% calcium-chloride solution was ponded on the pavers top surfaces during freezing and thawing cycles. Test results dramatically illustrate the effect of cement content on paver permeability and performance in the scaling tests.
