The Tennessee Concrete Association turned its Nashville headquarters into a showcase for creative and sustainable uses of concrete.

Tennessee Concrete Association (TCA) officials wanted their new campus to do more than provide office space—they wanted to make a statement about concrete as the most creative and sustainable building material for the new century. This desire drove them to develop the campus as a concrete showcase.

The project used several Low Impact Development strategies, and emphasized energy efficiency, durability, and safe concrete construction methods. The 1.88 acre campus includes an 1800-square-foot concrete uninsulated block building and a 10,000-square-foot fire-damaged steel warehouse.

The association decided to use the concrete block building as an office and training center, and developed the remainder of the site as a living museum highlighting concrete's many uses and applications.

They began by removing an existing asphalt parking lot and installing pervious and conventional concrete. A concrete perimeter fence of retaining wall blocks made from returned concrete added security to the site. Attractive demonstration areas for concrete flatwork provided a major aesthetic upgrade. Footings were installed for three small buildings intended to showcase concrete's ability to provide safe shelter from inclement weather. Rainwater harvesting cisterns were added, as well as a rain garden and infiltration bioswale.

The office building's new façade includes 2 inches of insulation, and features manufactured stone and cement-based siding. A dual-fuel (gas/electric) HVAC system provides further energy savings.

TCA hosts tours for designers, owners, regulators, and members to showcase concrete's ability to make projects better now and in the decades to come.
